Dutch-made Chevron Bead. 17th Century

Chevron beads has been more popular than any other beads. First invented by the Venetians in the 16th century, these beads are still in production today. The Dutch also manufactured chevron beads throughout the 17th century.

Chevrons are drawn-glass bead formed by forcing or blowing multiple-layered glass into a tapered corrugated mold, hence creating points on its outer surface. This process is then repeated by covering more glass layers of various colors. Finally stripes are applied to the surface and while the glass is still soft, it is then drawn into a cane of six feet long, cooled and finally sectioned into beads. They are then ground to produce a more finished product.

This necklace terminates with a bead and loop closure.

Bodhi Seeds Mala (Tibet)

This is a Tibetan Buddhist rosary comprising 108 bodhi beads made from the seeds of ( Ficus religiosa) , a sacred tree of the followers. It is divided into sections of amber, coral and turquoise beads. Although the number, arrangement and materials of prayer beads are different from each religion, symbolic associations are linked with flowers, gardens and prayer beads. In Tibet and India, the Sanskrit word japamala means " rose chaplet, " assuming that the beads were made from rolled petals of rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus).

During the Roman period rose flower was symbolic of beauty and perfection. " Rosary " is derived from rosarium " rose garden."

They are 150 beads in a Roman Catholic rosary. The muslim rosary has 99 beads.

A necklace inspired by Tuareg people. Sahara desert.

This necklace is threaded with multi color glass beads, semi precious stones and eleven tiny Tuareg motifs gold pieces of 18 carat gold. The clasp is also made from eighteen carat gold. Tuaregs are haughty camel herders who are also known as 'Blue men of the desert'. Their reputation derived from the veils and robes of deep indigo cloth they are wearing. Desert indigo being costly indicates wealth. The dyes are beaten and not soaked into the cloth due to scarcity of water. The dye easily rubs off and permeates the skin.

Their camels are used in their trans-Saharan caravans transporting goods to the mediterranean, Europe and Arabia.
