Tinder pouch. Tibet 1910-1920's

The pouch is made of leather with a stripe of steel on its lower edge.It contains small chips of flint and dried materials such as shredded bark or edelweiss blossom for use as tinder. In order to create sparks, a piece of tinder is pressed against a piece flint held in the left hand, and the chip is strike with the steel edge of the pouch. When the tinder smoulders it can light a fire. The incised motifs on the stripe of steel is inlaid with brass depicting dragons, a ball of flame and two fish. The leather is overlaid with pieces of incised brass inlay depicting flowers and scrolls.
