Bugis People's Betrothal Cup. Indonesia. Late 18-19th Century

Silver cup embossed and chiseled resembling lotus petals. The base of the cup is engraved in stylized Arabic within a star. A young suitor would despatch some betel to his beloved in a beautiful pedestal silver cup through a trusted intermediary. The acceptance of the present signified agreement to the proposal. Bugis people were seafaring people of South Sulawesi (known as the Celebes) that was associated with the notorious shipwrecks in the region.
