These brass mantra cylinders, handcrafted items deeply rooted in Tibetan Buddhist traditions, are classic for containing rolled prayer scrolls inscribed with mantras [e.g, "Om Mani Padme Hum,"the compassion mantra of Avalokiteshvara} The engraved patterns-flowing, swirling motifs resembling clouds, vines or auspicious floral designs are typical of chased engraving techniques used by Himalayan artisans. These decorations often draws from Tibetan iconography, such as the Eight auspicious symbols [Ashtamangala] or protective motifs to invoke blessings and ward off negativity. The brass material made them accessible to nomads and pilgrims traversing the Himalayas where they were kept close for protection during travel or they may have been for a household shrine.
